Metal Building Installation: Step by Step Process

The benefits of steel buildings are clear. These durable, cost-effective structures hold up to anything Mother Nature throws at them. They withstand years of use and require minimal maintenance.

Another reason people are turning to steel buildings for a range of agricultural, industrial, commercial, and personal uses? It’s easy to construct a steel building. In fact, many people choose to erect the structure themselves.

Metal building construction is generally quicker and easier than other types of construction. However, it’s still crucial to do it well. This guide will give you an overview of the metal building installation process.

How to Install a Metal Building

Installing a metal building is typically straightforward and relatively simple compared to traditional construction methods. However, there are many critical steps you must take to ensure you build your structure correctly.

Even those familiar with construction must take proper precautions. Following specific steps to ensure safety and follow proper practices is critical. The construction process will go more smoothly if you are prepared and aware of all the stages of building erection.

Here are the steps you can follow to erect a metal building.

1. Review the instructions

Your pre-engineered building kit will arrive with detailed construction plans. These plans should include drawings and assembly constructions.

Before you begin construction, you must carefully review these plans. You’ll learn how each component fits together throughout the construction project. Keep the plans and refer to them throughout the construction process.

2. Assemble your installation crew

Once you understand the scope of your project, you may assemble your crew. Consider how much of the work you can do independently. Be realistic about your needs and carefully consider how much help you need.

You may also want to consider hiring project management. This can be helpful for first-timers or people without extensive construction experience.

3. Prepare the site

Site preparation is critical to the success of the construction process. Before beginning installation, ensure you have all permits and are following local building codes.

You may need to level and grade the site. Your building will also require a cement slab foundation.

Look at the instructions to determine where the anchor bolts will be. Measure the slab from the center of each bolt and compare them to ensure even placement.

Measure your concrete slay from the top left to the bottom right, then the top right to the bottom left. These measurements should be equal to guarantee proper foundation shape.

4. Identify your building components

Pre-engineered building kits arrive at the job site pre-measured and pre-cut. All the components you need will be in the kit. However, it is critical to look at each element and make sure you can identify each piece.

You should also make sure you have all the nuts and washers required for construction before beginning to build.

5. Assemble the frame

Begin the framing process by assembling the I-beam columns and rafters. These large, heavy pieces are the most essential elements of the construction process.

Before attaching columns, make sure your bolts are clean. Ensure you are spacing them correctly. Work from the middle outward. Level each pillar before moving to the next.

After installing the four columns of the center frame, install the sidewall girts. Use this sequence for all remaining rafters.

6. Install girts, purlins, and framed openings

Once the frame is complete, it’s time to add rafter frames, purlins, eave struts, and wall girts. These elements support the roof and walls. Install temporary bracing to steady the frame until you finish sheeting the walls.

During this process, you will need to use nail pins or sleeve anchors. Shoot-in anchors are too weak for this part of the construction. Refer to your installation instructions to complete other building accessories.

7. Install walls and roof

Once your framing is complete, you can focus on installing root sheeting, roof panels, and walls. Using fasteners, screw the sheeting into the frame.

Wear proper safety clothing while working with fiberglass sheeting. Do not tamper with the vinyl facing. Fold the access vinyl back over the fiberglass. This creates an effective moisture barrier at the edges of your structure.

Install roof panels and weather stripping following the same procedure you used to install wall panels. Run sealer over the top of the closure strip to attach each roof sheet. Don’t let insulation get trapped between the roof sheet and the closure strip. Follow this procedure to install all roof paneling.

Metal building installation is relatively simple compared to other types of traditional construction. However, it is important to follow proper building techniques and safety precautions at every stage of the process.
